Advice for a beginner

I've had my ACE 250 for a week now and have only found bottle caps and junk. I was told that as a beginner I should dig up every signal, but haven't found as much as one penny yet. I live near downtown dallas. Any advice (ACE 250 settings, where to go, etc) would be appreciated. Thanks!!
